English Expressions with the Word 'BOOK' - Free spoken English lesson.



Hi This is Ceema, and I am back with a new lesson on expressions using the word book. Well, we all know what a book is. Well a book is... you know, a bunch of pages bvondes together, but when you are talking about or using expressions using the word book, the meaning takes an a whole different level. Ok So let's look at a few expressions or words of the word book. The first one is: to try every trick in the book. Well, what is it, to try every trick in the book. When I use this expression, I am saying that I have tried every possible way of achieving something.  So let's say you have tried ...bussiness; and your bussiness is not doing very well. It¡'s kind of you know , giving you a little bit of profits, but you want to make at work very hard. You want to be a very succesful bussiness man or sucessfull bussinesswoman. So you will try every trick in the book, to accomplish the task of making your bussiness work very well. In other words, you will try every possible way or the best way possible of achieving something. In your case achieving succes in your bussiness.

However this chapter is quite interesting because I got totally new phrasal verbs for you Now what is a phrasal verb A phrasal verb is basically a verb used along    preposition like up, out , on, and so on. so phrasal verbs are very interesting expressions when you combine a verb and a preposition together. So let's have a look at a few of them, ok? The first one is to beef up, well, the word beef  what does it bring to mind? If you are a not vegetarian, if you have beef , beef comes from a buffalo , when we are talking about beef up. we are talking about something that is really strong, so when I say beef up, I mean, that i wanna make something stronger or increase the value of something or increase the number of something. So I can say something like: The stadium beef up their security for the final match, or  John goes to the gym to beef up so he tries to increase his muscles, ok ? Our next expression is bristle at
